How can we help British business improve environmental performance?

RecycleLink

We want to create an online service enabling businesses to recycle waste far more effectively.

The idea is to bring waste producers and processors together using a centralised trading platform that will facilitate collaboration and therefore reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

How to reduce costs and make money by separating your waste.

Cleanly separated recyclable materials without any contaminants are greatly sought after by reprocessing and manufacturing companies. Waste which has been carefully separated helps them significantly to reduce their costs, makes recycling economically viable, and is of course good for the environment. However, it is absolutely crucial that the waste materials they receive have no contaminates, otherwise it is of little ...more »

BoxLink

BoxLink is an online platform linking local businesses that have an abundance of quality used cardboard boxes to members of the public in need of cardboard boxes for free. Retail businesses can be inundated with cardboard boxes. Whilst the vast majority of businesses do recycle these, many are perfectly adequate for being directly reused rather than going through the energy intensive process of recycling. Furthermore, ...more »

Recycling Hubs

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure – the unseen value in waste. This idea promotes the recycling or the re-use of any unwanted items between local businesses. It is proposed that a ‘recycling network’ or infrastructure be established where businesses act as ‘hubs’ for a specific type of item, for example unwanted computer devices, where items of this type can be dropped off or picked up. The use of OS Open ...more »

Recyclopedia – taking the pain out of recycling.

Recycling of food and product packaging is a simple and widely accepted way for consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and their consumption of finite resources. Local authorities in the UK provide recycling services as part of their routine waste collection. However, there are confounding factors surrounding domestic recycling: • Not all materials are recyclable. • Packaging is often made up of various components ...more »

Demographic Profiling of Recycling Behaviour

Mobile phone producers such as Orange, Three Mobile, Virgin Mobile, et al need to collect a high percentage of the mobile phones and tablets they put on the market through take-back schemes. Failure to collect 65% of the tonnage by 2016 can lead to heavy fines for the business owners. Businesses need more detailed information about which city centres and communities respond to campaigns in order to target their efforts ...more »

Neehoy: Sociable Recycling

In the UK around 4.5 million people are registered on recycling / reuse websites which encourage people to give old or unused belongings away (e.g. Freecycle, Freegle, RealCycle). They help to improve the environmental performance of businesses by extending the lifecycle of products otherwise thrown away as waste. Despite their widespread popularity and the increasing availability of social and geographic information ...more »

Grease-it / Household cooking oil pick-up service

Could London become the first city in the world massively recycling its household oil? Ideally, we should be all sending our old cooking oil for proper disposal or energy production, avoiding costly blockages to the drains and further pollution. However, unlike restaurants, households do not produce huge quantities of fats which makes it uneconomic and unpractical to organise their proper disposal. If there was an efficient ...more »

Re:Cycle bike scheme

Recycle is a Newhaven based project which aims to reduce the pressures on landfill waste as it prevents unwanted/unused bicycles being sent to the local waste recycling facility. Recycle will collect from the public any unwanted bikes in whatever condition. The bicycles are then assessed and refurbished to a standard where they are safe to be reused. The refurbishment work takes place in a workshop coordinated by a trained ...more »
