There are a lot of small and private woodlands which when cut produce timber that is not viable to sell on commercial basis so is used as firewood or just left to rot, often the wood is good quality such as cherry, ash, beech etc.
There are also a lot of craft makers who are looking for small quantities of wood for turning, carving, furniture making etc. but cannot source the materials especially when they are urban based.
The recent increase in interest of hand making items from the maker community shows additional demand in the raw materials.
