The Utility Survey Exchange Portal

Utility detection and mapping surveys are commissioned every day by a wide variety of organisations to support feasibility studies, built infrastructure projects, highways work, utility projects and any projects likely to affect, or be affected by, buried services. With the release of PAS128 in 2014 (PAS128:2014 – Specification for underground utility detection, verification and location), a robust and consistent methodology ...more »

The Lie of the Land

There is often a disconnect between owners of buried assets and other parties with a stake or an interest in the land which those assets traverse: land owners, governmental agencies, developers, contractors and the public. The land, including its ownership, its uses, its development potential, its relation to the environment and its geophysical properties is, literally and figuratively, the common ground linking these ...more »

GeoPharos: Know where you stand

Our idea is to create a map-based digital environment which aggregates, interprets and showcases a diverse range of geological, geophysical and environmental datasets, and identifies high risk zones (hotspots) using physical and geological principles and data analytics. Citizens and organisations will be able to check for subsurface and environmental risk hotspots at local, regional or national scales, allowing them to ...more »

5D Underground Infrastructure Mapping

Cityzenith is a key technology partner in the City of Chicago's Underground Infrastructure Mapping project that was recently presented by Chicago CIO Brenna Berman to Chicago Mayor Emmanuel and London Mayor Khan https://vimeo.com/183060781. The project aims to develop a new process, data storage platform, and construction scanning tools to create an accurate 3D map of underground utilities in the City. Consolidated and ...more »

Securing Utility Assets

One of the biggest causes of failure is due to theft and vandalism. In 2009 an estimated 90,000 people were left without electricity in North Kent due to vandalism . A lot of the UK assets are in remote and vulnerable locations that attract anti-social behaviour. Thames Water estimate that they spend 1.2M on replacing stolen fittings . This proposal intends to create a geographic information application capable of ...more »

Prioritisation of Asset Management

The consequences of burst water mains are exacerbated in areas where there is an identified high risk of surface water flooding and where the areas is a vital transportation node / route. A review of historical information on burst water pipes provide numerous examples of significant consequences to the local environment, due to the high level of surface water risk and intense transportation disruptions. By understanding ...more »

Holo

Field operatives need a simple tool to interpret complex and inter-related datasets when locating assets, and in particular when trying to avoid strikes. Using Microsoft's 'Hololens' as a basis, this device would allow those in the field, irrespective of their IT skill level, to see through the ground as the Hololens overlays CGI with the real world in real time. This would enable them to assess the best course of ...more »

Virtual Trial holes

Physical Trial Holes are dug every day to understand buried infrastructure locations and type prior to (capital) works design and commencement of construction activities. By using a digital handheld system to enable all excavation works to be recorded and stored in the Cloud. At the first stage of the excavation exposing the exisitng asset, all necessary information is recorded for creating the VTH – 1. Utility type, ...more »

Tumblewheel

Surveying underground tunnels is time consuming and expensive. Automating this process using drones faces similar problems because of personnel requirements to both operate the drone and retrieve it if it becomes stuck in a confined space. Tumblewheel is a stabilised survey platform within a wheel (of varying width - it may even be a sphere) which can increase of decrease in size and free itself if stuck. It's design ...more »

Mapping Historic Utilities

As archaeologists we have considerable experience in the problems posed by poor utility mapping available for commercial users such as ourselves, and of the financial and Health & Safety implications of unexpectedly finding utilities while excavating a site. Our proposal is to provide a service which digitises historic utility maps and makes available the resulting data. With digital records not in use by utility companies ...more »

Re-purposing pylons to include micro provision and CO2 capture.

The idea is to provide a network of climate action hubs worldwide, that is solar -wind enhanced electricity transmission pylons which also extract ambient CO2. The extracted CO2 is intended to be conveyed to enclosed tree nurseries and greenhouses to increase tree and horticultural growth by about 40%. Excess CO2 will be used for fuel and fertilizer manufactured, and stored in sandstone, abandoned mine shafts or under ...more »

Geo-Spatial Drainage Asset Management

For the first time in the drainage inspection software market, WinCan have moved the functionality of this type of application from being just a pipe video and defect identification tool, to an integrated suite of packages that now encompasses a GIS platform, a network 3D application, manhole scanning software with point cloud creation, web based report delivery to client and the traditional pipe inspection software.

Predicting and Mapping Ground Movement Around Utilities

To provide a mobile application for use on smart phones and tablets that will help to manage underground assets by identifying areas most at risk from incremental environmental changes caused by temperature, soil moisture and human activity. The tool will assist in the prevention of failures to underground services and the prioritisation of upgrades to the systems, thus reducing the need for unplanned costly emergency ...more »

Online mart providing maps showing utility underground assets.

There is currently no online national mapping system available that can instantly show all underground utility assets to any interested party. The need for such an online mapping system is well known within the utility and construction industry and has been endorsed within the forthcoming BSI PAS256 standard which at its core has the principle of getting utility companies to publish and share data for the benefit of ...more »

Routes to the Roots System

A system for modelling existing and future tree root structure and growth within a specific location. The tree modelling data will be combined with existing GIS data to visualise how the roots interact with underground assets. This will aid in the prevention of damage to underground assets. It will also aid in the selection of appropriate trees for planting sites in urban and peri-urban environments. Appropriate tree ...more »
